Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard was founded in 1979 by German-born winemaker Hermann J. Wiemer on the west side of Seneca Lake in New York's Finger Lakes, and is now led by Fred Merwarth, who continues Wiemer's emphasis on vineyard health, sustainable farming, hand-harvested and hand-sorted fruit, and small-lot fermentations with indigenous yeasts. The estate's Josef Vineyard is named for the winery's founder and holds some of Wiemer's oldest Riesling plantings; it is farmed toward an intentionally off-dry, more richly styled bottling within the estate's range.
