Profile & Story

Tokaj-Hétszőlő is one of the historic estates of the Tokaj region, with holdings tracing back to 1502, and is now part of the Michel Reybier wine portfolio. The estate converted 55 hectares to certified organic farming in 2015 and farms only its own grapes for its Hétszőlő wines; as its technical director has put it, an organic approach helps 'protect the vitality of the vines' for better quality now and in the future. Hétszőlő's terroir, built on the region's characteristic loess soils, is credited by the estate with producing wines of 'great harmony and incomparable complexity,' with a smoothness and aromatic quality distinctive to loess-soil vineyards. Its Aszú 5 Puttonyos bottlings are made from hand-harvested, botrytis-affected grapes — chiefly Furmint, together with Hárslevelű and Sárga Muskotály typical of the appellation — macerated into a base wine to reach the sweetness and concentration denoted by the 5-puttonyos classification.

Tasting Notes

Classic 5-puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from Hétszőlő's loess-soil vineyards: deep gold in color, with botrytis-driven notes of apricot, orange marmalade and honey, a viscous, luscious palate, and the region's signature racy acidity carrying the sweetness through a long finish.
