Profile & Story

M. Antonio de la Riva is a revived Sanlúcar de Barrameda bodega, originally founded in the late 1700s and purchased by Manuel Antonio de la Riva in 1838, whose wines and holdings in the storied Pago Macharnudo were well known and admired throughout the region until the bodega was sold to Domecq in the early 1970s and the name gradually dissolved. In 2017, Jerez natives Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Pérez revived the M. Antonio de la Riva label after acquiring a few rows of vines in Pago Macharnudo, pairing the project with their historical research into nineteenth-century Jerez winemaking. Rather than favoring a single house style, they focus on connecting old, often-adopted soleras to their specific vineyards and pagos. Their standard NV Manzanilla is made from 100% Palomino Fino, sourced primarily from the Casilla Verde parcel in the Miraflores Baja pago roughly 7 kilometers from the coast, on lustrillo, lentejuela, and parada albariza soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel on the lees, fortified to 15% alcohol, and biologically aged under flor for roughly three and a half years in a traditional solera.

Tasting Notes

Manzanillas of this style, aged under flor by the sea in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, are typically pale straw in color with a briny, saline edge and aromas of chamomile and fresh-baked bread from the flor; the palate is bone dry, light-bodied, and delicate, with a crisp, saline finish.
