Profile & Story
M. Antonio de la Riva is a revived Sanlúcar de Barrameda bodega, originally founded in the late 1700s and purchased by Manuel Antonio de la Riva in 1838; the historic house held prized vineyard land, including in the celebrated Pago Macharnudo, until it was sold to Domecq in the early 1970s and its name gradually disappeared. In 2017, Jerez natives Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Pérez revived the M. Antonio de la Riva label, focused on reconnecting old, often-adopted soleras with their specific vineyards and pagos rather than a single uniform house style; alongside their own wines, they have sought out and bottled small surviving soleras from other historic, now-defunct Jerez bodegas. Andalucía's Marco de Jerez is the traditional home of Sherry, where Palomino Fino grapes grown on the region's white albariza soils are aged oxidatively, without the protection of flor, to produce Oloroso. This Oloroso, from the Balbaína Baja pago near Sanlúcar de Barrameda, follows that traditional oxidative style.
Tasting Notes
Olorosos of this style are typically dark amber to mahogany in color, having lost the protective layer of flor early in their life to age fully oxidatively; expect a powerful, nutty nose of walnut and dried fruit with notes of orange peel, a full-bodied, dry palate with lifted volatile acidity, and a long, warming finish.
