Quinta do Noval's name first appears in Douro land registries in 1715, making it one of the oldest Port estates in the valley. António José da Silva, a Porto shipper, acquired and replanted the devastated, phylloxera-hit property in 1894, and it was his son-in-law Luiz Vasconcelos Porto who reshaped the vineyard's narrow terraces into the broader, better-exposed terraces still used today. The estate made its name with the celebrated 1931 vintage declaration and has been part of the AXA Millésimes group since 1993. Noval Fine Ruby is a blend of wines from different young vintages, with an average age of three years, matured in large wooden casks. It is vinified by pumping over in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats (26-28°C) from a blend led by Tinta Roriz and Touriga Francesa among other traditional Douro varieties.
