Profile & Story

The Rare Wine Co. launched its Historic Series in 1998 to revive American appreciation for Madeira, working with Vinhos Barbeito winemaker Ricardo Freitas. Each wine in the series is named for and honors a city in early America where Madeira was especially prized during the 18th and 19th centuries — Boston among them. The wines are blended from aged components, typically 10 to 60 years old, to build complexity at accessible prices, and all are matured by the traditional canteiro method of barrel and bottle aging. 'Boston' Bual sits toward the sweeter end of the Historic Series lineup, positioned between the drier Charleston Sercial and Savannah Verdelho bottlings and the richest, sweetest wines in the range.

Tasting Notes

Described by Roy Hersh as showing a light amber-tawny color with a nose of dried figs, walnuts, maple syrup, mahogany and a hint of bouillon cube, Boston Bual has a rich, sumptuous mouthfeel. Its hallmark is complexity — cinnamon-clove spiciness with overtones of citrus peel and woodsmoke — carried by enough refreshing acidity to keep the sweetness in balance through a long, dry finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Boston Bual works well as both an aperitif and an after-dinner wine, and its long, dry finish gives it versatility with food beyond typical dessert pairings.
