Red Tail Ridge Winery sits on 50 acres above Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes, founded in the mid-2000s when Nancy Irelan — formerly Gallo's VP of Viticulture and Enology R&D — and her husband Michael Schnelle left California to build a vineyard on a site shaped by ancient shale seabeds and Ice Age glacial deposits; the winery, constructed in 2009, was certified LEED Gold in 2011. Teroldego, one of the world's rarest grapes and still largely confined to its native Trentino, is planted on the estate's RTR Estate Vineyard. Per the winemaker, this 100% Teroldego is fermented in open-top one-ton bins, undergoes full malolactic fermentation, and is aged with minimal intervention for 19 months in a mix of neutral Hungarian puncheon and French barrique.
