Profile & Story

Alberto Orte is a winemaker and historian in Jerez dedicated to reviving nearly extinct Andalusian grape varieties through organic and biodynamic farming of old vines. Vara y Pulgar is crafted from Tintilla, one of southwestern Spain's rarest grapes, cultivated in Jerez for centuries before nearly vanishing after the phylloxera epidemic; Orte sourced cuttings from surviving vineyards to produce the first 100% Tintilla still, dry wine made in the region in over a century. The vines are tended in Jerez's chalky Albariza soil at 60 meters elevation, and the wine is aged 18 months, 10 months split between oak vat and concrete tank, followed by 8 months in used French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Opaque ruby in color, with a highly perfumed nose of smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, candied flowers, and succulent herbs. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated boysenberry, bitter cherry, and violet pastille flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens, with dark berry and floral notes lingering on a long, spicy finish shaped by smooth tannins.

Pairing Recommendation

Pairs well with roast lamb, spicy sausage, and charcuterie.
