Profile & Story

Mastroberardino has been producing wine in Campania since 1878 and is the region's most historic estate, credited with preserving many of southern Italy's native grape varieties. This Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso is made from 100% Piedirosso grown on the loose, mineral-rich volcanic soils of Vesuvius, on southeast-facing vineyards at about 170 meters, with vines averaging 20 years old, trained in raggiera and spalliera systems with Guyot pruning. Grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October and vinified classically in steel tanks over about 15 days at controlled temperature (22-24C), then aged in bottle for several months.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red in color, with aromas of marasca cherry and plum joined by spicy notes of pepper and clove, mineral undertones, and a distinctive smoky character. The palate is delicate, highly drinkable, and fresh, echoing the same fruity, spicy notes.

Pairing Recommendation

The winery pairs it with legume soups, cured meats, fresh and aged cheeses, pizza, pasta with tomato sauce or legumes, red meats, and grilled swordfish; it can also age ten years or more, best served at 18C.
