Profile & Story

Toreta is a small family winery in Smokvica on the island of Korcula, founded by Frano Banicevic's great-grandfather and now run by Frano himself. The estate farms about 5 hectares of red, iron-rich soil and takes its name from the traditional stone shelters once used to protect vineyard workers from the island's winds; only five of these structures remain, all on Toreta's own land. Korcula is considered the historic home of Posip, the grape having first been identified and given its own appellation on the island in 1967; Toreta's Posip is hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel with a few hours of skin contact, and spends a few months in Slavonian oak to add weight and texture.

The winery pairs it naturally with seafood and pork dressed with Mediterranean herbs; a regional favorite is ravioli stuffed with local goat cheese.
