Profile & Story
Oban distillery was founded in 1794 in the small West Highland coastal town from which it takes its name, and today operates some of Scotland's smallest copper pot stills. Its spirit condenses slowly in wooden worm tubs set outside among the rooftops, exposed to salted sea air, giving the 14 Year Old its distinctive maritime character.
Tasting Notes
The nose is warming and sweet, with oily, waxy, and nutty notes balanced by orchard fruit, opening into Christmas pudding, malty cereal, and aromatic orange, with later hints of brine, smoke, menthol, and pine. The palate is full, rich, and almost oily, dense and spicy yet sweet, developing the comforting chewiness of rich fruit-bread with orange zest and clove before turning drier and minty. The finish is long, beginning syrupy before drying into elegant, coating tannins with dark chocolate character, pine-fresh notes, and a trace of late, cedary smoke.
Pairing Recommendation
The distillery recommends serving it neat in a tumbler, perhaps with a little cool spring water, and notes that its character pairs well with salted caramel flavors.
