Profile & Story
Franz Gojer's Glögglhof estate has been farmed by the Gojer family for generations at St. Magdalena, above Bolzano in Alto Adige, and is today run by Florian Gojer. Alongside the estate's signature Schiava and Lagrein, white varieties such as Kerner, Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc have grown in importance over the years. The Karneid bottling comes from a west/northwest-facing vineyard at 550-600 meters, on light sandy soil formed by porphyry weathering with glacial deposits of granite, basalt and gneiss. The grapes are picked in two passes with different aims - an earlier harvest for acidity and freshness, a later one for fullness and aromatic complexity - then transported in small crates and processed gently using the cellar's natural gradient. After pressing, the must is cold-settled for at least 48 hours at 6°C before a slow, controlled fermentation and lees aging through the winter. As with all of the estate's white wines, the Kerner is vinified fully dry, with no more than 2 g/l residual sugar, to let its minerality and racy character lead.
Tasting Notes
Intensely fruity on the nose, with notes of peach and citrus and a trace of muscat. The palate is straightforward and mineral, with racy, invigorating acidity, medium fullness and a fruity finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Pairs well with salads, summer pasta dishes and grilled fish; an excellent aperitif wine.
