Profile & Story
Alain Carrère founded Domaine de Majas with his wife Agnès in 1992 in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, Roussillon, starting from two hectares of his father's land that had previously gone to the local cooperative; the estate has since grown to 30 certified-organic hectares, which Alain and Agnès run together with one part-time employee. Alongside Carignan vines aged 30 to 120 years, they grow Macabeu, Rolle (Vermentino) and Chardonnay, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah and a little Chenanson, on schist, volcanic stone and limestone soils. This orange wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested from 35-year-old vines on clay-limestone slopes with schist, at a yield of 30 hectoliters per hectare. The whole clusters macerate on their skins for ten days, then ferment with indigenous yeasts and age in concrete tanks on fine lees; the wine is bottled unfiltered with only minimal sulfur added, and is best drunk within three years.
Tasting Notes
A beautiful pale orange color, with aromas of citrus and bletted apple. The palate is fresh and highly aromatic, with notable minerality and impressive length.
Pairing Recommendation
Best served at 10-12 degrees C as an aperitif, or alongside seafood, shellfish, fish, and poultry.
