The Rare Wine Co.'s Historic Series Madeira, produced in collaboration with the Madeira house Vinhos Barbeito, was created in 1998 to introduce American wine lovers to Madeira's history and complexity; each wine is named for a U.S. city with deep 18th- and 19th-century ties to the wine. New York Malmsey, released in 2002 as the first wine in the series, is made predominantly from Malvasia and is the sweetest and richest wine in the Historic Series.
Tasting Notes
As Food & Wine described it, the wine is "incredibly rich, with dark fruitcake flavors and dry spice that balances its sweetness." It unfolds slowly in the glass, revealing layers of coffee, toffee and date, followed by earthy, almost truffle-like flavors on a powerful, assertive finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Pairs beautifully with a wide range of desserts - chocolate, nuts, citrus and dark fruits - and also complements foie gras, sweetbreads, or any dish finished with a rich, sweet sauce.
