Profile & Story

Leonardo Bussoletti farms 10 hectares across Narni, San Gemini, Penna in Teverina and Alviano in Umbria's Terni province, on soils of white calcareous clay, sand and rock, working to recover and elevate the region's native varieties. Asla Ciliegiolo Narni -- named for Aslan of The Chronicles of Narnia, a nod to Narni's link with the name Narnia -- is made from 100% Ciliegiolo sourced from two vineyards in San Gemini (Colle Ozio and Colle Pizzuto), 5-15 years old, on medium-textured calcareous clay at 230-290 meters, Guyot-trained and hand-harvested in 20kg boxes. Fermentation is spontaneous over 6-10 days, followed by about 6 months' aging in stainless steel on fine lees and 1-2 further months in bottle before release; annual production is 20,000 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Per a US retailer's tasting note, the wine shows fresh red cherries and deep red floral notes with delicate herbal tones and a bit of black pepper spice on the nose, juicy strawberry and raspberry fruit on the palate, with restrained acidity and minimal tannin.

Pairing Recommendation

The producer describes it as a wine that can lift through richer foods.
