Elio Ottin's adventure began in 1989 when, aged 23 and fresh from the Institut Agricole Regional, he bought his first plots between the communes of Quart and Saint-Christophe, above Aosta. Canto X is the estate's tenth wine and its first Chardonnay, made from the 2021 vintage onward, driven by Elio and Nicolas Ottin's passion for the variety. The name comes from the vineyard's history: with the suppression of the religious orders and the confiscation of Church property by the Kingdom of Italy, this land -- then part of the ecclesiastical patrimony -- was bought cheaply by a local family, at the cost of excommunication. Canto X of Dante's Inferno recounts the punishment of the heretics, those who challenged the spiritual and temporal power of the Church, and the wine is named in homage to them.
