The Odoardi family, of German origin, settled in the Nocera Terinese hills of Calabria in 1480 -- the wine's namesake. Cantine Odoardi farms native varieties including Gaglioppo, Aglianico, Magliocco Canino and Greco Nero in the Savuto zone at the mouth of the Savuto river. '1480 l'Inizio' is a Gaglioppo-centered IGT Calabria Rosso blend that the New York Times' Eric Asimov described as 'smoky, tannic and somewhat wild, like Calabria, but concentrated and delicious.'
