Château Gloria is a Saint-Julien estate created from scratch by Henri Martin, who began with a single hectare of vines in the late 1930s and founded Château Gloria in 1942, deliberately acquiring parcels from classified growths whenever he could. By 1955 the estate comprised vineyards from seven different classified growths, four of them ranked second growth in the 1855 classification. Henri Martin went on to serve as President of the Interprofessional Committee of Bordeaux Wines and to administer Château Latour, and toured the United States as an ambassador for Bordeaux, building Gloria's reputation there through the 1960s and 70s — culminated by a 1976 New York Times Magazine feature, "The Miracle of Château Gloria." Today the estate's 50-hectare vineyard, the most expansive in Saint-Julien, threads across the appellation's 11 classified growths and is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
