Profile & Story
Krug Grande Cuvée traces back to the dream of founder Joseph Krug: to craft the very best Champagne he could offer every year, regardless of annual climate variation. Each year Maison Krug honors that vision with a new Édition. Composed around the 2015 harvest, the 171ème Édition blends 131 wines from 12 different years, from 2015 back to 2000, with reserve wines from the house's library making up 42% of the final blend. The final composition is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, and 18% Meunier. Cellar master Julie Cavil drew on fresher reserve years — 2008, 2013, and 2014 — for vivacity and tension, on warmer years such as 2000 and 2006 for patina and a toasty quality, and on some 30 Pinot Noir expressions to bring generosity, spice, and structure.
Tasting Notes
A light golden colour and fine, vivacious bubbles open onto aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried, and citrus fruits, marzipan, and gingerbread, followed by grilled notes and flavors of almond paste, quince, lemon, and limoncello.
Pairing Recommendation
Krug Grande Cuvée suits a wide range of dishes, from aged Parmesan to turbot with truffle. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif with Jabugo ham and mature Comté, or served with oysters, grilled shrimp, Indian or Moroccan food, and desserts such as carrot cake, tarte tatin, and cheesecake.
