Profile & Story
Domaine Rolet was founded in 1942 by Desire Rolet at Arbois, and in 1958 all four of his children chose to stay in the family business and take it over, building it into one of the largest family-owned estates in the Jura with holdings across Arbois, Cotes du Jura, L'Etoile and Chateau-Chalon. Arbois Rouge Tradition is drawn from hand-harvested, organically farmed terraced vines in the communes of Arbois and Montigny-les-Arsures, planted at 280 to 380 metres on red marl and gravel. The US importer gives the current assemblage as 60% Pinot Noir, 35% Trousseau and 5% Poulsard, while the estate lists the classic Tradition blend as 40% Poulsard, 30% Trousseau and 30% Pinot Noir; the grapes are destemmed and fermented separately on indigenous yeast, then matured apart in old barrel and foudre for twelve months to preserve each variety's character before the final blend is assembled three months ahead of bottling.
Tasting Notes
Neither the estate nor the importer publishes a tasting note for this cuvee. In style, a light-framed Arbois red built on Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir from marl and gravel shows a pale, translucent ruby, aromatics of red cherry, cranberry and redcurrant with dried herbs, forest floor and a faint smoky spice, a supple medium-light palate with fine tannin and lively Jura acidity, and a clean, savoury finish; it is often served lightly chilled.
Pairing Recommendation
The cuvee goes well with a filet mignon, a roast lamb with thyme or, more simply, a Comte tart.
