Profile & Story
Rodney Strong Vineyards has been family-owned in Sonoma County for more than 60 years. Rod Strong was among the first modern winemakers to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley, establishing the heritage River East Vineyard in 1968 in the alluvial clay-loam soils near the winery in Healdsburg, which still contributes fruit to this bottling today. The 2023 vintage was shaped by a wet winter and a cool, late season that delayed harvest by about a month, allowing extended hang time; the wine ferments for seven days in tank and ages eight months in French oak barrels, 35% new.
Tasting Notes
Complex aromas of ripe plum, forest floor, black truffle, barrel toast, and fireplace embers lead to a silky, rich mouthfeel with ripe cherry and red plum over cured meat and dark toasted oak; acidity carries through to a finish marked by fine tannins and a touch of espresso.
