Tiziano Mazzoni farms 4.5 hectares at Cavaglio d'Agogna, in the hills east of Ghemme in Alto Piemonte, having returned to his ancestral village in 1999 to reclaim vineyards abandoned after the war. He works organically and makes roughly 1,200 cases a year of 100% Nebbiolo wines — even where the Colline Novaresi and Ghemme appellations permit blending — aged in larger, used oak casks in the style of the traditional Barolos that drew him into wine.
Tasting Notes
Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo is typically lighter in colour and more red-fruited than its Langhe counterpart, showing sour cherry, dried rose and an iron-tinged, savoury edge over firm acidity and fine tannin.
