Markus Sonntag farms two hectares in the far north of Austria's Weinviertel, near the Czech border, having taken over his family's vineyards in 1998 and converted immediately to organic and later biodynamic and permaculture practices. His "Sonntag Geschlossen" project (the name a wry nod to how rarely the small operation was open for business) is built around extended barrel aging of Grüner Veltliner, in some cases for decades, giving the wines an unusually deep, evolved character before release.
Tasting Notes
Extended-barrel-aged Grüner Veltliner from the Weinviertel typically moves beyond the variety's classic white-pepper freshness toward riper orchard fruit, nutty oxidative notes, and a rounder, more textured palate, while retaining the grape's natural structure and length.
