Profile & Story
Vigneti Vecchio is a young, family-run estate on the northern slopes of Mount Etna near Solicchiata, founded by Carmelo Vecchio and Rosa La Guzza. Carmelo spent over fifteen years working for Andrea Franchetti at the neighboring Passopisciaro winery before starting the project in 2016, farming organically with minimal intervention in the cellar. Crasà Contrada is a single-vineyard wine from alberello-trained vines planted around 1930, roughly 90% Nerello Mascalese co-planted and co-fermented with a small field-blend of other indigenous varieties, including some white grapes such as Inzolia, Grecanico, and Catarratto.
Tasting Notes
Etna Rosso from old, high-altitude Nerello Mascalese typically shows a pale, translucent ruby color with aromatic red and dark berry fruit, volcanic mineral and saline notes, fine, structured tannins, and the lifted acidity that gives these wines their close comparison to fine Burgundy or Barbaresco.
