Sanchez Romate Hnos. was founded in Jerez de la Frontera in 1781 by Juan Sanchez de la Torre, an influential Enlightenment figure in the city, and is one of the very few remaining wineries in the Jerez Denominacion de Origen still in the hands of local owners. In 1887 the fourth generation created an exclusive brandy for the family and their closest friends - Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva, the house's flagship. The bodega was named Official Purveyor to the House of Lords in the United Kingdom in 1909 and Official Purveyor to the Sacred Apostolic Palace of the Vatican in 1917. It works two estate vineyards - Pago Anina, nearer the coast, for the finos, and Pago Cuartillo, further inland, for the olorosos - on albariza soils with more than 40% calcium carbonate, above the regional average, and ages in American oak casks under the traditional criaderas y soleras system. This Amontillado is the estate-fruit (Vinedos Propios) bottling: biological ageing under the veil of flor followed by oxidative ageing. 17% vol.
