Profile & Story

Domaine de Marquiliani is a roughly 200-year-old estate on Corsica's eastern coast near Aghione, reclaimed by the Amalric family in the 1950s after being abandoned following WWII. Anne Amalric returned to the domaine about 20 years ago to run the vineyards; the estate was discovered by importer Kermit Lynch over 15 years ago and has been imported by his company ever since. Sitting between the coastal plain and Corsica's interior peaks, the vineyards benefit from cooling breezes off Monte Rinosu, giving a fresher mesoclimate than much of Corsica; soils are schist and granite gravel with silt, farmed organically. Gris de Pauline is a pale, barely-there rose built around the island's indigenous Sciaccarellu (roughly 80%) with Vermentinu and a small addition of Syrah, made by direct pressing with brief skin contact, cold stabilization, low-temperature fermentation and 1-2 months' aging on fine lees.

Tasting Notes

Delicately pale robe with crystalline, silvery reflections. The nose shows almond, white flowers and maquis scrubland herbs; the palate has a frank attack with a silky mouthfeel, a peppery finish, and remarkable freshness and balance. (Producer tasting notes; Kermit Lynch's own copy describes it as a soft, pastel-hued rose with hints of almond and a touch of pepper on the finish.)

Pairing Recommendation

Suggested pairings from the producer: tapas, sushi, grilled fish, and white meats.
