Profile & Story

Luberri – Familia Monje Amestoy is a family winery in Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa, led by Florentino Martínez Monje, a self-made entrepreneur devoted to this lesser-known corner of Rioja; the estate's vineyards grow in white calcareous soil along the Ebro river, backed by the sierra, and the winery describes its approach as a "viticulture of detail" that unites modern technique with ancestral wisdom across five distinctive red wines. Biga de Luberri is made from 100% Tempranillo, harvested in the first half of October and vinified traditionally, with fermentation at a controlled 30°C and ten days of maceration before twelve months of Crianza aging.

Tasting Notes

Biga shows a medium-depth cherry color, a modern take on Crianza where fruit leads and fine oak adds nuance and complexity. The nose offers delicate aromas of fresh, clean fruit alongside notes of leather, spice, and fine wood from its twelve months of aging. On the palate, its entry is cheerful and elegant; the flavors of the aging — vanilla, wood, smoke — come through while fruity acidity is maintained, and a hint of aromatic herbs recalls the vineyards it comes from.

Pairing Recommendation

White and red meats, roasted lamb, pork, or beef, game, poultry, stewed meats, rice dishes, stewed legumes, mushrooms, and aged or blue cheeses.
