Cantina Fratelli Carafoli was founded in Ravarino, a small village in the province of Modena, by Mauro Carafoli in 1919. A short distance from the town of Sorbara, the estate has long specialized in Lambrusco di Sorbara and Lambrusco di Modena, adding twenty hectares of vineyard in Sorbara in 1965 on a thin, well-drained strip of land between the Secchia and Panaro rivers. Nicchia is named for Virginia Oldoini, the nineteenth-century Countess of Castiglione nicknamed Nicchia, whose portrait appears on the label. This Lambrusco di Modena is a blend of the Salamino, Marani and Grasparossa grapes from a 23-hectare vineyard on alluvial soil planted in 1990, given a brief cold maceration before finishing with the Charmat method.
