Profile & Story
Ciavolich is one of Abruzzo's oldest wine estates, founded in 1853 by a family of wool merchants who settled in the region in the 1500s; today it is led by Chiara Ciavolich, farming 35 hectares of native varieties between Loreto Aprutino and Miglianico. This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOP comes from the Pianella vineyard, grown on loam-clay soil at 250 meters, where proximity to a nearby lake keeps the vine roots humid through the dry season, lending freshness to the wine. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with a single delestage, aging nearly a year in steel before six months in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from this cool, lake-moderated site is typically deep ruby in color, with aromas of dark cherry and plum layered over gentle spice; the palate is soft and approachable, with easy tannins and a fresh, food-friendly finish.
