Profile & Story
Marco De Bartoli first released Vecchio Samperi commercially in 1980, reviving the pre-fortification style of eighteenth-century Marsala from Contrada Samperi outside Marsala, on soils rich in limestone and minerals. It is 100% Grillo, harvested at a minimum 15% potential alcohol since the wine is never fortified, and aged via the ancient perpetuum method (akin to a solera), blending in young wine so the average age in the solera is about 15 years; natural evaporation over its long aging brings it to around 16% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Deeply complex and oxidative, with aromas of dried figs, dates, roasted hazelnuts, orange peel and a savory, saline rancio character reminiscent of a fine Amontillado. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, nutty finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Aged cheeses, braised meats, oven-baked turbot; also excellent as an aperitif.
