Profile & Story
Poggio al Sole farms organically in Chianti, west of Florence. Ponente is their IGT Rosso Toscana, a Super Tuscan blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, named for the west wind off the Mediterranean that the estate calls a defining factor in the terroir; no synthetic fertilizers or pest-control products are used. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-September to early October, fermented in stainless steel with about 20 days of maceration, and matured in barriques for 18 months before bottling in October.
Tasting Notes
Dense and rich in finesse, with plenty of fresh cassis fruit and plum, balsamic notes on the nose reflecting the Chianti terroir. Smooth, well-present tannins on the palate and a powerful, long finish.
Pairing Recommendation
A perfect companion to a main course built around dark meat.
