Emmolo traces to Salvatore Emmolo, an Italian immigrant who planted vines and started a grapevine rootstock nursery in Rutherford, Napa Valley, in the 1920s; the winery today is led by his descendant Jenny Wagner, of the Caymus/Wagner family. The Merlot sources from Napa Valley vineyards, including estate land held by the Emmolo family for generations, on light gravelly soils; crop-thinning and extended hang time build an elegant, distinctive style.

Napa Valley Merlot in this style typically shows dark berry fruit with a supple, earthy edge, ripe black cherry and plum, gentle spice, and smooth, velvety tannins that make for an approachable, food-friendly red.
