Profile & Story
Andi Weigand farms in Iphofen, in Germany's Franken region, on Keuper soils on the Iphöfer Kronsberg. He took over winemaking from his father in 2015 and converted the estate to organic and natural methods in 2018, working with an 80-year-old basket press and large old wooden barrels. His 'White' cuvée blends the classic Franconian varieties Bacchus, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Scheurebe, with exact proportions shifting slightly by vintage. The grapes are hand-harvested and direct-pressed into century-old large-format barrels, where the wine ferments spontaneously and rests on full lees for about ten months before being bottled unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulfur.
Tasting Notes
Fresh, juicy and free-spirited, opening with pear and wildflowers and rounding out with honeysuckle, guava, a touch of smoke, tropical fruit and citrus. Restaurant's Notes: Bacchus, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, and Scheurebe grapes pear with a textured and vibrant palate packed with honeysuckle and guava. Winemaker follows the same process for each of his whites: grapes initially go through his 100-year-old direct press. Juice is then transferred to wooden barrels for nine months or so before bottling. The wines are fresh, reviving and clean with a touch of smoke, tropical fruit and citrus
