About the Wine

Castanon Vineyard is a 7.5-acre site located in the heart of Redwood Valley, Mendocino County—about two hours north of Sonoma. Organically farmed by Jose and his wife, this family-run vineyard has been cultivating Zinfandel and other red varieties for over two decades. The site is known for its striking red soils and sweeping valley views. Despite facing intense summer heat in 2022, the deep-rooted vines remained resilient, producing fruit with excellent structure and purity. Grapes were harvested from two separate parcels at peak ripeness. 15% of the fruit was fermented whole-cluster in tank to bring aromatic lift and structural complexity. The wine was aged for 8 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, to integrate spice and texture without overpowering the fruit. The wine was bottled unfined to preserve its character and expression.

Tasting Notes

The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, firm but polished tannins, and a core of red fruit that leads into a long, balanced finish. Elegant yet approachable, this debut Zinfandel captures the essence of Redwood Valley’s terroir and offers excellent aging potential.

Pairing Notes

This wine pairs beautifully with duck confit, miso-glazed vegetables, grilled lamb, or aged cheeses. Its structure and spice also make it a great match for dishes featuring warm herbs and cinnamon. Serve slightly cool to highlight its brightness and complexity.
