Weingut Holger Koch is a small family estate in Vogtsburg-Bickensohl, on the volcanic slopes of the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, overlooking Alsace across the Rhine. Holger Koch and his wife Gabriele Engesser took over the estate from his parents in 1999 and founded the winery in 2001, replanting with small-berried French clones sourced from Alsace and Burgundy, including material from Puligny-Montrachet. Farming organically across roughly 7.5 hectares, the estate specializes in Burgundian varieties — Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder — in a style prized for its subtlety and precision. The village-level Kaiserstuhl Chardonnay is hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented in large, used oak barrels, then aged on its full lees.

Chardonnay from the volcanic soils of the Kaiserstuhl typically shows a round yet subtle, fine-mineral character, with ripe pear and citrus fruit, a refreshing core of acidity and a silky texture from extended lees contact.
