Profile & Story
Weingut Scheuermann is run by brothers Gabriel and Simon Scheuermann in Niederkirchen, in Germany's Pfalz region. Gabriel knew from childhood that he wanted to be a winemaker, and the brothers took over the family estate about a decade ago, converting it from a bulk-wine business into an estate celebrated for spicy, mineral, purist terroir wines. They have farmed organically since 2012 and now work increasingly biodynamically, believing that only in the absence of manipulation can a wine's natural layers unfold and reach their fullest potential. The Sur Lie Riesling comes from parcels of loess and sandstone soils around Niederkirchen, in a style the brothers liken to neighboring Alsace: wines that fuse lightness and freshness with real depth and length. It is direct-pressed and spends eighteen months in stainless steel on its lees, unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes
The extended lees aging brings a rich mineral depth and an extra layer of energy to this Riesling, whose loess-and-limestone character shows as light-footed, textural and precise, with freshness balanced by real depth on the finish.
