Profile & Story
Chereau-Carre is a family winery in the heart of Muscadet country, built from Bernard Chereau's purchase of the 15th-century Chateau de Chasseloir estate in 1953 and expanded through marriage into the Carre family's Chateau l'Oiselinere vineyards; today run by Bernard Chereau with his daughter Louise, across 133 hectares and six domaines. Comte Leloup du Chateau de Chasseloir, cuvee des ceps centenaires, comes from Chasseloir's oldest plot: 100+-year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines on schist soils between Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine and Chateau-Thebaud, the oldest vines in the entire Muscadet appellation. Hand-harvested in September, the wine is fermented with temperature control and aged on its fine lees (sur lie) for 9-10 months with batonnage before bottling directly off the lees.
Tasting Notes
Deep notes of fresh lime and lemon, oyster shell and salt spray, with a Chenin-like fruit character recalling quince and pear; the century-old vines and extended lees aging give the wine more concentration, depth, and textural weight than typical Muscadet Sur Lie.
