Weingut Franzen is a family estate based in Bremm on the Mosel's 'Terrassenmosel,' now run by the next generation after the family patriarch Ulrich Franzen's death; roughly 90,000 bottles are produced yearly across about 10 hectares. In 1999 the family recultivated a 1.5-hectare parcel of the Bremmer Calmont -- Europe's steepest vineyard at up to 65° incline, a natural amphitheater whose slopes plunge some 300 meters to the Mosel -- hand-planting around 7,900 Riesling vines on bare slate over three years after acquiring the long-fallow Fachkaul parcel. This Kabinett, made in the traditional lighter, fruity-sweet Mosel style ('Kabinettchen'), captures the site's dramatic, hand-worked terroir: fermented in stainless steel, low alcohol (8% ABV).
