Karthäuserhof is the eighth-oldest winery in the world, founded in 1335 by Carthusian monks in the Ruwer Valley (a Mosel side-valley), and family-owned since 1811, now in its seventh generation under Albert Behler. All estate wines come from the historic monopole Karthäuserhofberg vineyard plus fruit from Mertesdorf and Waldrach, on red Devonian slate soils. Schieferkristall ("slate crystal") is the estate's signature VDP.Gutswein, the calling card of the Chef du Cave / Technical Director Mathieu Kauffmann. Vinified with native yeasts. ABV 11%.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage shows a nose initially dominated by lemon and lime, with typical herb and fennel notes. Animating acidity creates tension on the palate; incredibly crisp yet with a pleasant, almost rich mellowness from long lees ageing. Finish shows Ruwer freshness and peppery slate spice.
Pairing Recommendation
Excellent with simply prepared smoked or cured fish and sushi (per producer/importer notes).
