Weingut Peter Lauer is a fifth-generation Saar estate based in Ayl, with vines dating back to 1830 in the Konen/Lauer family and Peter Lauer himself taking over in 1938. Since 2006 father Peter and son Florian Lauer have worked the estate together, farming organically and fermenting spontaneously with wild yeasts in old wooden casks. Lauer holds parcels in the grand cru Ayler Kupp, Schonfels and Saarfeilser sites. 'Barrel X' is Lauer's appellation-level, off-dry (feinherb) Riesling, blended from multiple parcels across four Saar villages -- Ayl, Saarburg, Wawern and Wiltingen -- with Ayl and Wawern contributing fruit and power, Saarburg racy acidity, and Wiltingen spice. The name plays on the fact that, unlike Lauer's numbered single-cask bottlings, this cuvee has no single barrel of its own. 9.5% ABV.
