Schloss Lieser is a Mosel estate run by Thomas Haag (son of Wilhelm Haag of the equally storied Fritz Haag estate), who purchased the property in 1997 with 6.5 hectares including parcels in Brauneberger Juffer, Juffer Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich and Niederberg-Helden; the estate has since grown to around 20 hectares. Schloss Lieser is one of only two Greater Mosel estates rated a full five stars by the Vinum Weinguide Deutschland, alongside Egon Muller. The Brauneberger Juffer vineyard, named for a former nunnery on the site, is comprised of blue Devonian slate with iron inclusions on a nearly due-south exposition, with some ungrafted vines over 70 years old and slopes reaching 85% at their steepest; Schloss Lieser's holding lies in the prized middle 'filet' section of the vineyard, sourced for this Spatlese.
