Weingut J. & H. A. Strub is a Nierstein estate on the Rhine dating to 1710, farming many of Nierstein's first-class sites, chiefly the steep slopes (up to 60% gradient) of the world-famous Roter Hang, whose rare red Rotliegend slate/sandstone produces vibrant, opulent, terroir-driven wines; the estate also farms limestone-soil sites like Paterberg and Bruckchen for a cooler, higher-acid style. Riesling is Strub's flagship grape, alongside Gruner Veltliner and Silvaner. Pettenthal is one of Nierstein's grand cru vineyards on the Roter Hang: pure red clay-slate soil on up to 50% slopes. Strub's parcel sits on the south-facing 'Sommerseite' pocket of Pettenthal, which the estate says yields its lighter, fruitier Kabinett-style wines, in contrast to the cooler, longer-ripening 'Mundelpfad' parcel used for their dry bottlings.
