Weingut von Hovel is a historic Saar estate in Konz-Oberemmel, based in a 12th-century former monastery (originally a moated castle of the Franconian King Ardulf), farmed by the same family since 1803 and now in its seventh generation under Maximilian von Kunow. The estate owns 2.85 hectares in the famed Scharzhofberg and holds two monopole sites outright: Oberemmeler Hutte and Horecker. Max von Kunow, who took over from his father starting with the 2010 vintage, has moved the style slightly drier and is converting the vineyards to organic farming. Hutte's soils are a mosaic of blue, grey and red slate interspersed with quartzite, volcanic rock and iron veins, giving the wines their signature minerality and finesse; this Kabinett is fermented spontaneously and aged in stainless steel/neutral barrel, low alcohol (7.5-9%).
