Can Sumoi is the Serra del Montmell estate of the Raventos family, who set out to bring an abandoned property of 400 hectares of forest and 20 hectares of vineyard back to life as a living farm organism. Roughly 20 hectares of vineyard averaging fifty years of age have been recovered, planted only to local grapes -- Parellada, Macabeu, Sumoll, Garnatxa and Xarel-lo -- on ancient copper, ochre and brown soils of the Montmell Formation, laid down in the Cretaceous between 100 and 113 million years ago. Farming is fully organic and biodynamic, with spontaneous cover crops, short pruning, herbal preparations in place of copper and sulphur where possible, and sexual confusion to control Lobesia botrana. Muntanya is a sparkling wine of Macabeu and Xarel-lo, hand harvested and pressed at the cellar, made under a minimum-intervention protocol with no oenological additives and no added sulphur.
