Will's Cabin Vineyard sits on the Thomas Fogarty Winery's Santa Cruz Mountains estate, less than half a mile from the Gist Ranch vineyard, on a light, fine soil known as Vaquero sandstone. Unlike its neighbor, Will's Cabin is north-facing and notably cooler, making it especially well suited to Pinot Noir. The vineyard is planted to Swan and Mt. Eden clones along with Mariafeld, a Swiss clone that adds a touch of tannin and deepens the wine's color. Thomas Fogarty has made a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from this site since 2012, and production is very limited - the wine is usually available only directly from the winery.
Tasting Notes
The Will's Cabin Pinot Noir tends toward vivid red-fruit aromatics of cranberry, cherry, and grapefruit, with spice notes more subtle than the winery's other single-vineyard bottlings. Flavors are luscious and rich, with fine tannins, alcohol usually well under 14%, and a gentle, fading finish - more open and integrated at a younger age than its estate siblings.
