Alberto Orte draws on early-20th-century winemaking traditions to craft La Antigua Clásico, one of his longest-running projects, sourced from old-vine Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Graciano — some vines planted between 1940 and 1955 — on the steep, north-facing, high-altitude slopes of the Sierra de la Demanda in Rioja. The terrain is worked entirely by hand, and the cooler, high-altitude climate allows for slow ripening and a harvest that often runs into early November, among the latest in Western Europe. The Reserva is roughly 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, and 10% Graciano.
Tasting Notes
Deep red in color, with layered aromas of smoke, spice, cherry, and red berry alongside floral, game, and tobacco notes; the palate shows juicy raspberry and bitter cherry that turn sweeter with air, finishing with well-integrated tannins and a floral lift.
