Bosman Family Vineyards, in Wellington near Cape Town, made history in South Africa by pioneering Nero d'Avola: owner Petrus Bosman brought cuttings of the Sicilian variety back from a 2004 trip, and after the vines survived quarantine, grafted them onto established Cabernet Sauvignon rootstock, releasing the country's first Nero d'Avola bottling in 2014. The estate describes the grape as 'a resilient vine that thrives in sun-rich, water-scarce African soil.'
