Profile & Story

Escabeces began when Priorat winemaker René Barbier Meyer was approached by grower Oriol Pérez de Tudela to make wine from rare, 65-year-old parcels of Cartoixà Vermell — a pink-skinned mutation of Xarel·lo — clustered around a lieu-dit near Vilavella called Les Escabeces, in Tarragona, Catalonia. Oriol now leads the project. The wine is fermented partly on skins for two to three weeks, with the remainder macerated semi-carbonically, then aged in old barrels and amphorae for about eight months.

Tasting Notes

A deep orange color with an expressive nose of red berries and sweet spice, Mediterranean aromas of dry straw, finishing serious, dry and tasty with moderate ripeness and a clean finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Pairs well with grilled octopus, charcuterie, or aged sheep's-milk cheese.
