Celler 9+ was founded in 2010 by Moises Virgili i Rovira in La Nou de Gaia, a small village in Tarragona a few kilometres from the Mediterranean; the name plays on nou, which in Catalan means both new and nine, with the plus sign for the will to grow. Virgili comes from a farming family and works 35 hectares organically, 17 of them vines, alongside olives and carob. The Medol range takes its name from the Roman quarry nearby, and the numerals on the labels mark the progression of his cuvees. Base 2n is the entry-level red of DO Tarragona: roughly 60% Garnatxa Negra, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cartoixa (Xarel-lo) from certified organic vineyards, destemmed and macerated about six days, fermented and raised in stainless steel with no wood and no additions, and bottled with no added sulfites.
