Profile & Story

Domaine du Mortier is run by the brothers Fabien and Cyril Boisard at Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil in the Loire. The estate has been certified organic since 1999 and has practised biodynamics since 2007. Six hectares in the nearby village of Brain-sur-Allonnes are given over to an experimental agroforestry project, which supplies this cuvee and gives it its punning name - un brin de folie, a touch of madness. The white Brain de Folie blends Sauvignon with Grolleau Gris and Meslier Saint-Francois, the Grolleau Gris bringing a markedly muscat-like aromatic lift and the Meslier the acidity. Hand-harvested into crates with successive selective passes, then fermented spontaneously in an oval tank of 1,125 litres. Nature & Progres certified and bottled as Vin de France with very low sulphur.

Tasting Notes

The domaine publishes no formal tasting note for this cuvee; as a Loire white blending Sauvignon with aromatic Grolleau Gris and high-acid Meslier Saint-Francois, made without correction, the expected register is citrus and white orchard fruit lifted by a musky, floral top note, with a taut and dry finish.
